Awards for ONV, Yesudas, Chitra

Thiruvananthapuram: K.J. Yesudas and K.S. Chitra, playback singers, and O.N.V Kurup, lyricist selected for the Jnanpith award, are among the winners of the Swaralaya-Eenam awards announced here on Sunday.

Education Minister M.A. Baby, who was the chairman of the jury, said Mr. Yesudas and Ms. Chitra were selected for their overall contributions to Malayalam film music. ONV, he said, has enriched the world of films through his words and lines.

M. Jayachandran was selected the best music director. Madhu Balakrishnan and Swetha were adjudged the best young singers. The jury also selected Ravi Menon, film music critic and researcher, for an award for raising the appreciation level of music lovers.K. Omanakutty, N. Ayyappan and G. Rajmohan, jury members, were present.

Mr. Baby said the awards would be given away at a function in Dubai. He announced a posthumous cash prize of Rs.50,000 each for M.G. Radhakrishnan, music director, and Raveendran, composer, for their overall contribution to Malayalam film music.
